Following a difficult time in his life in 2018, which included two family grievances in quick succession, Chas left the workforce to focus on his health. In 2023, Chas Newham joined Samsic’s Coty Bournemouth team as a Waste Operative, taking the courageous step of returning to work. Since joining Chas has become an integral part of the team, inspiring colleagues with his resilience, dedication, and the encouragement he brings to the Coty team. In this interview, Chas reflects on his journey, the support he has received, and how Samsic has helped rebuild his confidence, to where Chas is now first-line support to Coty’s own staff.

Q: What inspired you to take the first step back into the workplace, and how did you find your way to Samsic?

A: Before joining Samsic, I was in a very different place. I was working with a support worker and attending church, which was helpful to me. The support worker was trying to encourage me back into employment, but funnily enough it was off my own back that I found this job. Taking that first step was great for me.

Working for Samsic has given me a routine and a sense of purpose, and the nature of the job has even improved my physical health. The freedom within our team is also a big positive. There’s no micromanagement, and that trust has really helped me grow.

Q: What difference has working at Samsic made in your life, both personally and professionally?

A: When I started, I didn’t need as much mental health support as I did before, but the journey I’ve been on since has been transformative and helped me gain confidence and independence. The management team has been incredibly supportive, motivating me in my duties and understanding during any absences I’ve needed. We work as a team, supporting and covering for one another. I’ve also felt comfortable being honest with management about how I’m doing.

Q: Is there a strong sense of culture within your team, and has this helped to give you a positive experience?

A: Absolutely. We all support one another. The freedom in our roles allows us to work independently, but if I need help it’s always just a call away and a colleague will be there—and vice versa. The environment we work in is comfortable and encouraging. I’m encouraged to speak up and not put too much pressure on myself, which has been key for me. It’s been made clear that our wellbeing within the team is important.

There’s a real social aspect within the team and we make time to connect. We regularly have breakfasts or lunches together and will do things such as secret santa, or have the occasional night out.

Q: How does Samsic’s leadership style help you within your role?

A: Carmelo LaVaccara [Cleaning Supervisor] and Jason Coppard [General Services Manager] are incredibly supportive and understanding. Feeling comfortable at work is so important—when you’re anxious or uncomfortable, it’s hard to communicate or perform well. Here, I’m encouraged to speak up and not put too much pressure on myself.

Sometimes, my manager notices I’m struggling before I even say anything and that level of care and attention means a lot. It helps me to ask for the help I need so we can get the job done, builds my confidence, and helps me focus so I can do my best work.

Q: Has your experience at Samsic helped to shape your perspective on your future?

A: I never would have imagined myself in this role, but now that I’m here, I’m genuinely happy. I want to continue supporting the team, gaining more experience, and helping newer team members. Learning is a big part of my role—we’re always discovering new processes and equipment—and I’m excited to explore my potential and what I can bring to the team in the future.

Q: How do you ensure the work you do has a positive impact on Coty?

A: Management has noticed that I’m always speaking with the Coty team, and trying to understand more about what Coty as a client likes or does not like about our service. If we as Operatives understand more about the site and the client, we can make the service better and our own lives easier. We can also this way see what’s coming up for the client next, so we can help to mitigate any future issues for them.

My approach has been positively recognised by Samsic management, which has been very motivational to keep on improving.

Q: If you could share one piece of advice with someone struggling with their mental health, what would it be?

A: It’s not always easy to talk about your problems. Many people find themselves stuck in a cycle or a rut where they feel unable to open up. But it’s crucial to communicate and seek support. Sometimes that might even mean giving someone else permission to speak on your behalf if it feels too difficult.

This role at Samsic is my first full-time job, and it’s given me a routine and a healthy physical outlet that has been really positive for me. I’m incredibly grateful to Carmelo, Jason, and the entire team for their support and encouragement, they’ve helped me to rebuild my confidence.

At Samsic, we are honoured to have team members like Chas who inspire us every day with their dedication, outlook, and consistent effort to support our clients and our internal teams. Chas’ story demonstrates how a supportive and inclusive workplace can rebuild confidence and create a sense of purpose, reinforcing Samsic’s commitment to empowering individuals through cultural transformation and shared values.
